by glittrgirl on 08 Aug 2007Barn Asia is a new restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne, which serves up fusion food based on fresh South East Asian cuisine, and served tapas style.
The menu is not vastly extensive, but there is a great choice of freshly made delicious food based on Vietnamese, Cambodian and Thai style dishes. The night I went with a friend, it was busy, and I have since heard that it is almost impossible to get in without a reservation.
The reviews it has had so far have all been gushing.
Barn Asia is very close to Central Station, in a newly built Square, still known as Newcastle Road. It is very informal, with blond wood interiors, sturdy bare table and benches for larger groups, and tastefully mismatched tables and chairs for more intimate groups. Paper lanterns and communist asian art makes for a painfully trendy decor, but the friendly staff and delicious vittels make for a fine dining experience.
With dishes priced from as little as four pounds you can eat cheaply if you want to. There is an excellent choice of wines and beers, and vegetarians are well catered for.
Feel sheepish asking for a knife and fork in asian places? Not ehre. A bamboo recetacle on each tabel makes choosing chopsticks or a fork a personal unobtrusive choice. I don't usually eat dessert, but they are superb here.
Go. If you can get a table.

by AdrianaSalazar on 11 Feb 2008The first time I went to the restaurant the service was extremely bad but the food was so fantastice that I let it go. That was in October 2007. I returned to Barn Asia last week and the service was as poor or worse but this time we paid more than 50£ for a not very special food.....each dish was worth it 5£ max. The ingedients were not ver fresh and the taste was extremely mild and weak. The service was dreadful...even worse than the first time. The person who served us who is actually one of the business partners or something like that didn not look at our face ONCE. Whic means he didn't smile, was attentive, respectful.....It was more or less as he was doing a HUGE favour just approaching our table when we were customers. The restaurant is PRETENTIOUS and snobish, the food is average and overpriced. NOT RECOMMENDABLE AT ALL

by malcolm on 11 Feb 2008Well, after many years of eating out in Newcastle I have finally found it...the WORST restaurant in the city. Service: rude and unpleasant, Food: at best tasteless, at worst awful. Value for money: well I paid over £50 for £5 ounds worth of food! If I live to be 100 I will never set foot in the place again.

by Polski on 25 Feb 2008Put simply? Absolutely fantastic. Mindblowing, to say the absolute least.
The service was impeccable, greeted by a smiling waitress, and attentive staff.
The food, similar to the service, was astonishing. The taste was rich and organic; fresh.
I advise everyone who can go to do so, as this is without a doubt the best Pan-Asian restaurant in the North East.
