do dont it just madagascar tour-operator

by KjetilKjernsmo on 12 Apr 2008We traveled with Ilay Tours on Madagascar in September/October 2006. It proved to be a very reliable operator. We organised most of the things we needed from Ilay by email before departure, and the guest house in Tana was nice, the vehicles and the drivers they used were also very good and was a good fit to our needs. They required pre-payment for certain services, but we found that this was unproblematic.
Ilay Tours has contacts with more specialised tour operators for some tours. They were also of good quality.
In conclusion, Ilay tours is a tour operator that can be trusted to organise a tour to Madagascar.

by ChicagoTrvlr on 05 Nov 2008I have to disagree with the earlier review. I had what most tourists would call a nightmare experience. When you pay an operation to take care of your trip you expect that they will:
- Make sure their subcontractors have funds to cover expenses -- our driver was "robbed" and the home office in Tana told the driver it was his problem..meanwhile we were paying the costs (800 euros) until some calls were made -- oh, and you don't expect everything to be subcontracted to begin with
- Make sure you actually have seats on flights they book for you...we had tickets but no seats and ended up delayed...our agent in Tana knew of the issue and after we expressed frustration with having to wait in the airport at 4 a.m. for 3 HOURS only to be turned away for the flight the next day did he go to the Air Madagascar office to clear up...why didn't Hari (our agent) do this before getting us up and before our arrival when the problem was well known before hand?
-- Not cancel your flight (by mistake? did we ever have a flight I wonder?) and ask you to travel 20 hours overnight back to Tana to catch the above flight that never existed
This operation is amatuer and run by incompetent people with little experience. If you are considering them don't. Pay the extra and get peace of mind from operators with South African or European groundstaff...not something i would normally recommend as I have travelled a lot of africa using locals but here, just stay away.
