My partner and i fancied a cosy sunday night drink on a miserably cold and wet day recently. We are Milton keynians, but had not been to the Old George hotel in Stony Stratford before, so thought we would give it a go. From outside the place looked inviting. However, on entering, the place was quite deserted, apart from a couple reading a newspaper at the bar, and a female member of staff serving. Though the building is historic, it was still crying out for a make-over iside. It was scruffy generally, and the feature of the place appeared to be a stuffed fox in the fireplace! The toilets were upstairs, and had graffiti on the walls. I cannot say we were greeted with any enthusiasm, in fact it became clear that the lady serving didnt really want to be there, and would loved to have been anywhere else. She appeared to be put out by our requests for drinks, even though we were basically the only people purchasing anything! We felt we had been an inconvenience by daring to come in and putting business there way. The bar lady told us that she often closes up early on a sunday, but my partner and i didnt realise this meant that customers would more or less to required to leave when she fancied shutting up shop! we had the cheek to order a drink at 2155hrs, and the lady was 'curt' in her response, replying "oh, i wanted to close up now". If it had been a Fawlty towers sketch, then it may have been amusing. However, i cant say we were amused, and sighed at the demise a bygone era of courtesy, and the good old fashioned British watering holes...

Amazed that i just read previous review by Charlie, but I have drunk there just a handful of occasions over the past 3 or so years but both Penny and Michael ALWAYS remember not only our names but our drinks too (my wife and I). The other staff have been just as attentive so I can't imagine what went wrong on Charlies visit. I have and will continue to recommend this place to my friends as a warm friendly, cosy, quaint place which oozes charm plus great food.
